This site will introduce you to the Jackson church of Christ, which began in Jackson on Old Cape Road in 1969. We moved to our new building, at North Shawnee, in 1986. As you browse through the site we hope that you will get to know us better, and more clearly understand God's mission for us and His will for you. On August 17, 1969, a gospel meeting with Gerald Cowan, from Caruthersville, Missouri, doing the preaching marked the beginning of the Lord’s Church in Jackson, Missouri. From 1969 until May of 1986 the church met at 1034 Old Cape Road. Then they moved into their new building at their present location of 310 North Shawnee.
Since 1969 the congregation has been served by the following ministers: Melvin Elliott, Jim Norville, Paul Sain, Harold Luscombe, Dan Todd, Sonny Preslar, Noel Quinn, Don Cox, Kenneth Dinkins, Jerry Culbertson, Bryan McAlister, Edd Sterchi, Bill Williams, and our current minister, Brian Mitchell.
LEADERSHIP
Elders (or shepherds or pastors) are referred to in the New Testament church as those who are given the responsibility of guarding and watching over the souls of the members of the church. Acts 14:23 as well as Acts 20:28 and Philippians 1:1, point to God’s design for a plurality (more than one) elder. I Timothy 3:1-7 list the qualifications of elders. Elders main responsibility is to protect, preserve, and provide for the spiritual well being of the flock, or church. Presently the Jackson church of Christ has six elders.
Deacons (or servants) are men who have been proven (I Timothy 3:10) and qualified to carry out specific areas of work designated by the elders. This office is also recognized by God as an area of service bearing certain and detailed qualifications ( I Timothy 3:8-13). Presently there are 10 deacons serving the church in Jackson.
One aspect of the organizational structure for the local congregation revealed in the New Testament is the role of the minister. The minister (preacher, evangelist) of the congregation has been given the responsibility of preaching and teaching from God’s word (1 Timothy 4:16, 2 Timothy 2:24-25). The Bible describes the minister as a servant of those who are in need, but his specific interest is in meeting the spiritual needs of those he serves. The minister is not an elder (shepherd, or pastor) because God’s Word describes the minister’s role differently from an elder (1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:6-9).
